Weight Watchers Weight Loss Programs
Weight Watchers weight loss programs was started by a 1960’s New York housewife in her kitchen. She lost 20 pounds and then got her friends on board to support her further and they all lost weight.
This is the basis of the group meetings that are central to Weight Watchers group counseling and weight loss system. They have tried to shift the concept into this century by going on-line but their best results still come from the personal touch.
Counting points is still counting calories
Instead of counting calories directly, Weight Watchers has developed their own Points System so that you can monitor your food intake. You can get this information at the weigh-in meetings or online. There is a monthly membership fee for these services of around $50 a month and they offer a special joining fee at a dollar.
You are required to follow a core diet plan using the points system to choose you food and to attend a weigh in each week. It is reported that the best results come to the people who stay for the meeting and do not just weigh and run.
From reports of friends of mine that have tried Weight Watchers, it seems that many consultants use the ‘cringe factor’ to keep you on track. I have heard horror stories of crushing public humiliation and embarrassment used to shock a client to greater efforts. Having said that, I have heard some very public success stories.
Where are the results?
Weight Watchers has had a noticeable lack of long term results in their clients. This is perhaps, because their basic ‘calories in – calories out’ model is flawed as a weight loss system. It is too simplistic. Also the meetings do not promote self reliance.
The people they attract are mostly not wanting to change the way they live their lives forever and learn to eat and exercise properly. They just want the fat to disappear and never come back. When they go back to their old ways the fat piles on again.
So to conclude, Weight Watchers weight loss programs are a very basic, proprietary calorie counting system with weekly group counseling and online resources.
